Alix 02:32 video
I wish she would come back I’m sure as hell looking for a sign Why did I keep going in a lie? I’ve wasted all this so called precious time I wish she would come back I’m sure as hell waiting for a sign Why did I keep going in a lie? I’ve wasted all this so called precious time I wish she would come back I sure as hell ‘ve been waiting for a while Why did I keep going in a lie? I’ve wasted all this so called precious time

Someone wants to tease you now Someone wants to put you down Someone wants to eat you out Someone wants to give you up It’s a complex world for a pitiful mind I’ve been out your door, watching you all the time Crucified Someone wants to ruin your name Someone ‘d like to know if you came Someone’s getting all the blame Someone overcame their shame It’s a complex world for a pitiful mind I’ve been out your door, watching you all the time Crucified

Grown 03:52 video
I was down when I was young And you thought you knew me And you held your breath then ‘Cause you wanted to be me Grown There were toenail clippings In an old cigar box And I took the beatings That you had me blamed for Grown Now you taught yourself happiness More mature than I ever was And you think that I’m self-obsessed A pedestalled hopeless cause Grown

I held on And you wouldn’t let me out You grew up And I wouldn’t let you down Hope vaporizer Dream Vaporizer I grew strong And I had turned you down You held on To nothing In the end Hope vaporizer Dream Vaporizer

You phoned me on a Thursday Telling me you were on the bus From the South of France to Brussels Things had started to become too much ‘I’m dying’, is what you told me Lying is what she blamed you for When you ran away From your responsibility So, you had an abortion coffee Kind of sad, an abortion coffee All that’s left is abortion coffee But I’m glad for abortion coffee So, we went drinking at a concert In a squat by the old town port That’s where you told me all about her And how you went for the last resort ‘She’s crying’, is what you told me Hiding is what she blamed you for When you ran away From your responsibility So, you had an abortion coffee Kind of sad, an abortion coffee All that’s left is abortion coffee But I’m glad for abortion coffee

Tinder 02:35 video
You’re crawled up in my bed The worst that I’ve had, since I met myself Should have known from your text ‘My mind’s a mess’ A sign of the times, or my mental trenches? I’m losing all of my senses So stuck in defense I’m becoming exchangeable It’s almost grotesque I can’t forget What I taught myself, the indifferent ass I’ve used up all of my chances Wasted my time with these godless endeavors The time of my life I can’t regret But the spoils of pride aren’t half as enjoyable I dreamt up all of your specs Never texted you back But I meant to do so Should have known for a fact My mind’s a mess While I tell my friends I want something else

Petty 02:51 video
Scraped from the paper My eyes are running red You were my neighbor Now you’re everything I have You say that I’m selfish And maybe you’re right But I’m finally caving ‘Cause I’m tired of the fights I pretend that I’m not this little Petty thing that you hold You tell me it’s over It wasn’t meant to last ‘Please don’t come over Let’s forget the past’ It doesn’t matter what I think You’ve made up your mind And now it’s hard to admit it But maybe you’re right I pretend that I’m not this little Petty thing that you hold
8.
When I woke up I was in denial My hands are shaking but I try to hide it It’s not a shame to day drink I end up taking someone’s girlfriend home It doesn’t matter, it’s a broken home And it’s not a shame to day drink No, it’s not a shame to day drink I haven’t answered any phone calls yet Don’t know where I am, the sun has set Might as well enjoy the time that’s left And it’s not a shame to day drink No, it’s not a shame to day drink
9.
You’re alone Everyone has moved on But you On your own Trying not to burn out Too soon And now you’re on the run From yourself At least one thing you don’t lack devotion for And now you hate yourself For this is too grotesque You’re used to smiling politely Is this all there is? You’re feeling ripped off And numb ‘Ignorance is bliss’ You always thought that sounded so dumb And now you’re on the run From yourself At least one thing you don’t lack devotion for And now you hate yourself For this is too grotesque You’re used to smiling politely Is this all there is? And now you’re on the run Is this all there is?

about

Barely Autumn, the band founded by Brussels based songwriter Nico Kennes, reinvent themselves on ‘Day Trip to the Petting Zoo’.

Their second album sounds more edgy and on point than ever. It radicalizes the band’s very nature: that is the creation of pure, straightforward songs about everyday life topics, while simultaneously transcending the ordinary.

‘Day Trip to the Petting Zoo’ is a record about loneliness and frustration, without descending into mere melancholy. It’s an unpretentious crusade by – and for – confused millennials, in search of their place in this world. It’s a tongue-in-cheek tribute to meaninglessness.

Stylistically, Nico Kennes refrains from any kind of musical limitations, thus casting off the band’s former ‘acoustic indie rock’ label. Bas synth-based pop noir, enticing art rock and plain mellotron melancholy: Barely Autumn effortlessly blend eclectic genres and truly come of age as a band on this album.

The lyrics – drenched in irony – display Barely Autumn’s characteristic down-to-earthness. The music at times alludes to EELS and The National, at others to DJ Shadow or Sufjan Stevens, while sounding fresh and vigorous nonetheless.

‘Day Trip to the Petting Zoo’ will be released on January 24th 2020.

about

Barely Autumn Brussels, Belgium

Barely Autumn writes unpretentious indie rock songs about everyday life. Their music pays tribute to prosaic – and therefore profoundly human – experiences such as heartache, love, anxiety or just plain having beers with friends.

After having released their self-titled debut (2017) and second album ‘Day Trip to the Petting Zoo’ (2020), Barely Autumn started working on new material again.
